Summer 2013 Season thus far...

Among all those new series that has begun airing, a few has already proved to be interesting, in terms of its plot and animation designs.

What came as the more significant series this season was Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou.

similarity wise, this series gave a feel of Madoka Magica, i mean seriously, after seeing how their 1st episode went. The difference this time around was that this series didn't quite take its time to visit the true plot of the series as compared to Madoka, which took around 3 episodes to bring out the true plot. Not that I was surprised to see this development, but more of I was already expecting this. Furthermore from the OP, I could see that this series does have a rather distinct plot as compared to the others this season. Magic powers coupled with the link to Tarot cards, this series can become one mysterious one if it wanted to be. Based on the number of Tarot cards available, I wouldn't be surprised if more characters were to show up with their individual cards, where the main 4 already utilises the Sun, the Moon, the Star and the Temperance. Really admire the way they show the emotions for each of the character, especially when Akari breaks down after being reminded by her actions that killed her cousin. It does seem to have a simple plot on the surface but who knows, we could be expecting more. Oh and also not forgetting the OP is sung by LiSa :) a rather amazing song too!

This series is an original series not based on any previous works which automatically piques my interest, after all I'm a fan of original series. Most of them do turn out to be great, well... most of them. Hopefully this turns out just as good! :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Danganronpa the Animation could be the series of the season too, with its blood-filled mystery and a rather interesting drawing style that adds to the mysterious feel of the series. Even the blood this time round is now shown as its proper colour, as compared to Taiyou's. Purple and pink it would seem to be.

Similarly, this series didn't take its time to create the 1st murder case, and within the 2nd episode, one has already fell victim to the horrifying game that was created for the Super High School students. What I didn't expect was for Sayaka Maizono to be the first victim of the game. Initially when it was shown that she was stabbed and was covered in blood, what came across my mind was that it was a fake death and had been set up to make the others think that Naegi was the killer while trying to test the system. It was until later where the facts did all point to her death and makes me surprised since I was kinda expecting her to stay on the game for quite long. After all her interactions with Naegi and almost becoming his love interest, it was pretty fast and weird to kill her off so soon yea.

Leaving that aside, the plot has already starting rolling and the students have to now participate in a class trial where failure to identify the killer will result in everyone being killed which also brings to the next point that this time, the killer will surely be identified since it's only the 3rd episode and it would be kinda awkward if the other characters were to be killed off. What interests me now is the way they will possibly explain Maizono's death, which I can't quite exactly picture it out, other than she is most probably in a struggle with the killer and finally succumb to him/her. Can't wait for the truth to be out! :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

not forgetting the suited up heroes of Gatchaman Crowds, where instead of Kamen Rider, we have a remake of an old series, where the protagonists are now Gatchamans! Furthermore, this is one of the few series that actually has a female as a main protagonist so we'll see how this goes.

The first person that reminded me when I saw the main heroine, was Valvrave's Shouko. Leaving the similarity of the character design aside, it was the personality that reminded me of Shouko. Always so hyped up, being excited over little things and being extremely enthusiastic, this is one unique female character we have here. As a remake, this series does have some particularly unique animation design as well. Not only does the characters stand out, but also in terms of their Gatchaman forms and monsters they are fighting, which seems more of an abstract art kinda thing, which I really like. Kinda rare to see this genre of series being aired, the previous which was Tiger and Bunny if I'm not wrong, so I'm actually getting excited for this series as well.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kami Nomi - Megami-hen has finally begun to air! Really appreciate the fact that it does not cover the rest of the heroines and jumped straight into the Goddess arc, which IMO, is the main crux of the series thus far. Seeing how the manga has progressed from the Goddess arc, this would be one interesting series to follow and to see the scenes being animated from the manga itself.

Another sequel that is being aired in the same season is the Monogatari series which now focuses more on each heroines' stories and their interactions with the oddities. As a SHAFT anime, the way they animate the series still retains the uniqueness of Bakemonogatari which is a good thing to be retained, or it wouldn't be called a monogatari series if it had changed. Still awaiting our dear Araragi to appear, while in the mean time we get to catch up more on Senjougahara, now with short hair, and Hanekawa too :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the other series including Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou and Blood Lad, both had a rather normal starting as a series, nothing quite like the rest of the season series. Plot aint as interesting as the others, so these series will have to wait for it to continue airing for a little while before I can decide whether or not to give it up or to continue watching them. Similarly with Kami-sama no Inai Nichiyoubi, which is interesting in one way and not in the other, possibly due to the abrupt start of the series, with little explanations so we'll see how that goes as well...

Last weekend, this & that...

for the full album of Cosfest this year, click here to view :)

Headed down to Cosfest on Sunday this time around, only for 1 day though since I wasn't free on Saturday this time round.

Thank goodness for yet another year of Cosfest with near perfect weather, it gets really squeezy inside the tent when there's wet weather so luckily this year had a pretty good weather. Didn't quite fancy the idea of rushing to Cosfest and later elsewhere on Sat although the idea of looking at the booths did quite tempt me for a little while... This's one of the things I quite like about Cosfest, one being that it's a free event and the other being the many booths that people can use to sell their own things, like self drawn portraits, handicrafts etc... AFA had those as well, but it's more of a different feel over here at Cosfest.

This year's sound system was rather bad, for the Karaoke competition, the off vocal music sounded quite muffled and wasn't clear as compared to the vocals from the singers... But this year's karaoke competition came with a unique twist that actually made it more interesting than just a normal singing competition. This year, there were 2 groups which will compete to win the best team and for them, there is a huge song list available where the members were all briefed before and it was from the audience that the song to be sung is chosen and each team would have to run for the hot seat to gain a opportunity to sing that song and win points. The first song that actually caught my eye on the list was Senbonzakura, I mean like, not many would be able to sing Hatsune Miku songs just as well, since it is actually quite difficult to hit some of the notes that Miku usually sings. Surprisingly when the song was picked, the singer actually delivered the song pretty well and it was really a job well done.

This year's Cosfest was more or less crowded with Shingeki cosplayers... It already became a hit to cosplay over the net when the series started airing, even Kyojins as well, so I wasn't that surprised after seeing such a number of cosplayers over at this year's Cosfest. What instead surprised me was the lack of cosplayers of the more recent series that I had thought I would see... such as Valvrave, Gargantia etc. Spotted a Yoshino cosplayer too, was quite surprised too since I wasn't expecting Date a Live cosplayers to be arriving so fast... The number of vocaloid cosplayers did became lesser this year but nonetheless, there were some prominent ones here and there :)

Didn't stick around for the Cosplay competition and the results for both the Karaoke and Cosplay competition since I was rushing for time to leave the venue at around 6... but nonetheless it was another milestone down for the year and I'm really looking forward to AFA this year round, especially when it made a comeback to Suntec City! For Cosfest, I do remember one year where the neighbouring tent was open for more booths to be set up, and that was a pretty good idea that I find a pity that it had not return for a couple of years now... Not only does it open up the event venue, it actually adds more variety of the goods that people would make and sell. Not forgetting more areas for the cosplayers to venture around too, rather than the usual tent, behind the tent and around it.

Another event down and next is AFA 2013! :D

got my hands on another wall scroll... looks amazing doesn't it? :P

Badass Chamber

The peaceful Gargantia returns!

Gargantia has ended its 13 episodes run, and seeing how it is an original series, it was a notable series with many potentials to bring it to a full 25/26 episodes to develop the story more but nonetheless, the 13 episodes had been satisfying.

Not based on any previous works, this original series revolves around the elements of science and technology, human behaviour and how interactions between different inter-galactic races will be. Honestly speaking, this would most likely be the case if we were to actually meet up with a real intelligent species from other galaxies. Similar to Ledo, the civilisation that he lives in is drastically different from the one on Earth, which we are familiar about, whereas Ledo's life revolves only in fighting and only the fittest and the useful are allowed to survive.

Our robotic counterpart, Chamber, has also learnt and grown together with Ledo throughout the course of the series, making use of his interactions and learning through his feelings to update its own intelligence and till the end, Chamber has evolved into an "individual" that have the understanding of the "right" choice to make instead of the usual analysis and compliance to orders like Striker has. From the start where Ledo first arrived on Earth with Chamber, I thought that the interactions that were shown of Ledo learning to adapt to life on Earth was taking too much of the series time that we're missing out on something, some action, however, it turns out that it was what the series' core was all about, on the topic of civilisation and how different people treat it to be. By showing how Ledo learns to adapt to a normal human society on Gargantia, it can be easily seen that what his previous civilisation, the Galactic Alliance and how Kugel attempted to change Earth, was a wrong decision to make and a morally wrong civilisation to live in. For a short 13 episode series, I was kinda glad that they decided to leave romance aside and focus on the plot instead, which was the strong point of Gargantia itself. Throughout the series where romance wasn't the real focus, I heaved a sign of relief once it was out of the picture, or that it was just left as it is between Amy and Ledo, rather than forcibly adding it in like what we saw in Robotics;Notes which to me, turned out horrible.

I guess the turning point of this series was the discovery about the true nature of the Hideauze which I am guessing as well that, that was the point where Chamber actually began learning something other than just following his own analysis and based on an AI-sense of thinking. When Ledo requested for Chamber to reveal what was the truth behind the Hideauze, he was shocked and began having thoughts that all those he had killed were previously humans as well and those thoughts and hesitation probably led Chamber to rethink his own options and his own decision making ways. Honestly after seeing how the series brought out the twist, that the Hideauze are actually humans, the first thing that came across my mind was the similarity between this and Shin Sekai Yori, where both had the similar topic on the "evolution" or "devolution" of human beings from the past. Since it wasn't long ago since Shin Sekai Yori had ended, after dropping that huge twist on the viewers, Gargantia's plot twist didn't came as shocking as I believe it would have been, for those who has yet to watch Shin Sekai.

Enemies?

Looking at the last episode, Chamber totally stole the show by showing how much it as learnt from Earth and how much it has changed over the course of the series. It has learnt to not just totally rely on its own analytical system to process questions and information, but had turn into more "human"-like where he totally rejects Striker's suggestion to change Earth which Chamber might have done it if it were to happen right when Ledo and it just arrived on Earth. Ledo spoke about how Chamber had felt this "family shame" kinda thing when it sees Striker making decisions and concluding in ways where the Galactic Alliance would agree to, but that wasn't the case for Chamber who has also adapted with living on Earth like another intelligent being. It rejected Striker's proposal, treating it as an enemy who, without Kugel, still functions and aims to become a divine being who wants to be served by the humans and not the other way around. Chamber however rejects this fact and firmly believes that as a human support interface system, it's goal and only aim is to assist its pilot in achieving his goals, even if it goes against the aims of the Alliance. For a moment, I did sense some death flags hovering around Ledo when he went all out against Striker. Chamber probably reached it's highest level of understanding after sensing Ledo's will to survive and threw him out of the cockpit and went on to take Striker down, together with it. Honestly the only death flag I sensed was Ledo's and not Chamber's which was one of the main reasons why I actually said that Chamber totally stole the screentime for the last episode. Goodbye Chamber, and we'll never forget those famous last words:

Go to hell, Tin Can!

Ledo's character development did play a significant role in the series, showing clearly how from a mind of a soldier starting to adapt to living as a civilian, and then turning back to his own ways when he discover the presence of the Hideauze and while trying to use Kugel and Striker as an "escape" route to force himself to deviate from his thinking that his enemies were humans as well, he realises his own "true" self and became "human" at the end of the whole series. For a human who was brainwashed by the Alliance to constantly fight against the Hideauze, they were all made to believe that by doing so, it was their only way of living and defeating the Hideauze would be their one and only purpose in their lives. However, I did think that Ledo could have previously felt something other than just plain fighting, after he remembers how his "little brother" got rejected by the Alliance and he teared for the first time in his life. And that was one of the potentials of the series I was talking about. The series did showed some flashbacks of Ledo's past, but none of them were properly explained, which I had hoped that they did. Nonetheless, it was heart-warming to see Ledo finally taking a grip on his own life at the end, where he acknowledges that he does not wish to die and wants to see the future. And that was when Chamber ejected him and asks him to carry on his mission to explore and to survive in this very world that he has ended up in. Not only has Chamber successfully evolved, but Ledo did, as well, as a fellow human being.

Looking back, the series only changed its own pace around episode 9 where previously there weren't much hints about the true plot of the series. And to that, it felt a little rushed in its own ways of trying to wrap the series up and I thought much more of the series could be developed even further. In terms of the history of humankind and the Hideauze and about the Alliance that Ledo had been under in the past. What I was most interested in, was the change of the Earth. From the previous video footages, we did see that Earth had undergone several ice ages and in order to overcome that, some of the humans, called Evolvers, change their own body structure to become Hideauze to migrate from space. And so what exactly did happen to Earth before the Gargantia and the other fleets took their "ground"? Even though we do know that it was the aftermath of an ice age, but what I had hoped was more history about the past, about all those relics that everyone is so keen about discovering. Even the Heaven's Ladder that Gargantia holds, what exactly is the history behind it? Perhaps leaving some parts unexplained makes the series a more debatable one but oh well, at least it had a happy ending and Ledo's back on Gargantia, living a normal human life like any others. The strong points of this series was definitely the human interactions and on how things learn and adapt to in a total different environment, such as Ledo and Chamber and now, even Ledo had a change in his own thinking where he now strives for communication between them and the Hideauze, since they are both humans after all. Overall, this series has been quite successful, it was rather dry at the start but once the plot started to pick up pace, it's as good as it gets. :)

The last bit of Chamber that stays with Ledo

had been a busy weekend, will update more next week, covering Cosfest as well :)
